Los Angeles Nomadic Division remains steadfast in Los Angeles Nomadic Division remains steadfast in our belief that all are welcome in this country. The recent, and ongoing, displays of power against immigrant and undocumented communities, and the people who support them, has no place here. LAND believes in the importance of gathering and showing up for one another, whether you’re supporting your neighbors or helping a stranger. We support Angelenos’ right to demonstrate and protest against recent events as part of a nationwide strike this Friday, January 30. Last year, we gathered at the Arlington Garden in Last year, we gathered at the Arlington Garden in Pasadena for “a lament (los angeles)” a performance by 2025 Mohn LAND grant recipient yétúndé ọlágbajú. Inspired by a facilitated slow reading of Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower,” led by Dr. Tamisha Tyler (@tamisha_tyler) and the Center for Restorative Justice (@thecentercommunity), ọlágbajú has been examining the conceptual differences between lamentation and grief as vehicles for processing current events and the reverberating implications of exploitative capitalism. Commissioned by Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), “a lament (los angeles)” builds on a previous performance, which took place at 500 Capp Street in San Francisco, with collaborators Titania Kumeh (@titaniaartmodel) and Nana Boateng. The performance created an open forum to express Queer, Black, and Indigenous collective lamentations and urgent calls for a new world. “a lament (los angeles)” was rooted by texts, songs, and prayers shared by the artist, collaborators, and community leaders: Helen Peña (@orange.mooon), Dr. Tamisha Tyler, Sonia Guiñansaca (@thesoniag), Tægen Meyers, Ashley Blakeney (@ladyblake23), Alexander Catanzarite, Kyla Carter (@_kylathecreator_), Astrid Kayembe, and Loveis Wise (@loveiswiseillu). “I’m just hopeful that this can be a space for us to gather and to witness each other in our grief,” yétúndé shared, in a new video by @hrdwrker capturing the process and final performance. Tap the link in our bio to watch more. “a lament” was commissioned by Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) and organized by Irina Gusin (@irina.gusin), LAND curator-at-large with support from Astrid Kayembe (@astrid.kayembe), LAND operations coordinator. This project was funded through the Mohn LAND Grants established by Pamela and Jarl Mohn. The initiative provides Los Angeles-based artists resources and support to present site-responsive, transdisciplinary work across Los Angeles County.

It is difficult to grasp all that transpired, in L It is difficult to grasp all that transpired, in Los Angeles and across the world, this past year. Collectively, we witnessed immense devastation and change. How does an organization continue to operate as normal with this as the backdrop of our activities? We look to those that we serve: Artists. Through all of the change and grief, artists continued to create. Through their creations, we gathered, still shaky and processing, but together. At soccer fields, freeways, parks, gardens, shopping malls, puppet shows, and rocket launches, we met across vast parts of this city, reminded of the joy and beauty that exists in every corner. Thank you to all of the artists, collaborators, supporters, attendees, and the LAND team, that brought our mission to life over the past year.
